Astronauts Commander Nathan Walker (Lloyd Owen), Captain Benjamin Anderson (Warren Christie) and orbiter pilot John Grey (Ryan Robbins) have been ordered to embark for the moon in the highly secret Apollo 18 moon mission. Does Apollo 18 discover the real reason for the cancellation of the Apollo project? Why is this mission so secret? Walker, Anderson and Grey are more guinea pigs than astronauts. Why? Because the Department of Defense suspects there is something on the moon that needs closer inspection, or at least confirmation that something is there. Why else would Westinghouse™ use Apollo 18 to put motion detectors on the moon? A recent failed Russian manned flight to the moon has the authorities worried that there is something there, on the moon, that caused the failure of the Russian mission. Walker, Anderson and Grey are want to find out. And find out they do. In a very clever twist, we all are given [cinematic] reason to worry about the 840 pounds of moon rocks that have been brought back to the Earth, most of the 840 pounds given to dignitaries, ambassadors and the like. What is it about those moon rocks? If this story were true, the theory that the moon is a "pinch" slung off the Earth would be all wrong. If you've seen Alien (1979) or any of its daughter products, it will spoil this film for you a little. I'll stop the Summary/Commentary now to avoid spoiling the film any further. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual CAP investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - Zero out of 100 The landing on the moon is perilous. Explosive startles are used rather often throughout the action portions of the film. The dead Russian cosmonaut is seen as a decimated and drained body. The astronauts are attacked and suffer physical invasion by arachnidial critters - graphically. There is more to the findings of violence in this film. Please look to the listing in the Findings section for a complete accounting of the violence content. Violence comes in many forms. It can be physical violence, emotional violence, psychological violence and even sensory or visual violence. This film is relatively heavy in physical and visual violence. No matter the form of violence, God has some serious warnings about embracing violence. One of the warnings is found in Proverb 16:29 where God warns that violence is "catching": that violence can lead one "into the way that is not good." Finally, 2000 years after God published His "findings" in the Bible, man decided to chime in on God's Wisdom and publish his findings about violence. Four professional public health agencies jointly reported that viewing violence in and as entertainment can lead the viewer, especially the young, to real life violence and can cause the viewer to believe violence is an acceptable way to settle conflict. Impudence/Hate (I) - Zero out of 100 Some form of profanity is spoken 22 times and the most foul of the foul words is spoken once. [Col. 3:8, Eph 4:29] Sexual Immorality (S) - 96 out of 100 The only content to which this investigation area can apply is the one astronaut's attempt at humor in a soliloquy involving talk of human anatomy. [Eph. 5:4] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 74 out of 100 In "celebration" of the upcoming departure to the moon, the astronauts engage in a backyard cookout involving drinking. [Eph. 5:18] Offense to God (O) - Zero out of 100 Deuteronomy 5:11 was not on the minds of the writers. Seventeen times God's name is abused, ten of them with the four letter expletive. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 There are no murders or suicides in the entire 77 minutes of the film. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |
(The objective heart of the CAP Analysis Model, independent of and insulated from the Summary / Commentary section.) There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
