ANALYZE THAT (R) -- ...by then it will probably be PG-13. Production: Baltimore Spring Creek Productions, Tribeca Productions Distribution: Warner Bros Director(s): Harold Ramis Producer(s): Len Amato, Bruce Berman, Chris Brigham, Billy Crystal, Suzanne Herrington, Barry Levinson, Jane Rosenthal, Laurel A. Ward, Paula Weinstein Written by/Screenplay: Kenneth Lonergan and Peter Tolan (characters). Peter Steinfeld, and Harold Ramis (written by). Peter Tolan Cinematography/Camera: Ellen Kuras Music: David Holmes Film Editing: Andrew Mondshein Casting: Ellen Chenoweth Production Design: Wynn Thomas Art Direction: Adam Scher In terms of moral and ethical assaults, Analyze That is nearly parallel to Analyze This from 1999. Analyze This earned a final score of 26 and a CAP ID of 4.84 while Analyze That earned a final score of 24 and a CAP ID of 4.37 (ID scores for most R-rated movies approximate 1.50 to 3.00). Even the scoring distribution (the CAP Thermometers) are nearly the same between the two movies. At least the thermometer spike patterns are nearly the same. More evidence of the consistency and reliability of the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model. I hope there is no "Analyze Another Thing" in another three years but if there is, I'll wager (if I were a betting man) the CAP analysis model will show them quite similar if not parallel. But by then it will probably be PG-13. In Sing Sing prison after Analyze This, Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) is up for parole. Just to make matters worse, another inmate tried to kill Vitti ... again. For a few days, Vitti launches a campaign of bouncing back and forth between rational and insane, increasing the insane each day due to the pressures of someone always trying to kill him. Vitti is staging insanity by acting out the musical side of "West Side Story." With constant renditions of, e.g., "I'm so Pretty", Vitti garners more time with his psychologist from Analyze This, Dr. Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal). Vitti is released in the custody of Sobel with a mandate that Vitti is to be cured before his parole hearing. Once out into the civilian world, Vitti fesses up to what he is doing. His plans are to get even with the rival mob who had the prison guards on their payroll -- the guards looked the other way and orchestrated and even attempted murder of Vitti. One attempt to murder Vitti was by another inmate trying to kill him with a knife. Another attempt to murder Vitti was by a guard pumping a few silenced 9mm caliber rounds into Vitti's bed made up to look like he was in it. Having no place safe to go, Vitti moves in with Ben and his wife, Laura (Lisa Kudrow). Laura is not happy with the new development. A crude and course criminal is living in her home! The first night at the Sobel's, Vitti brings in a woman for sex. Loud sex. After an unbearably long duration of this, Laura finally gets Ben to approach Vitti with the inappropriateness of such activity in their home, especially as Ben's 17 year old son was hearing it all. While the act is not seen and only the woman is seen in scant dress in Vitti's bed, the sound effects were vulgar enough. As further evidence of Vitti's social skills (and De Niro's willingness to portray them), he nonchalantly opens his robe to expose his nudity to a houseful of guests of the Sobel's, nudity hidden only by convenience objects. Another example of the caliber of this film is strippers. Twice. The first was pole dancing in underwear. The second was customers tucking money into a woman's bikini underwear. [Mark 6:28] De Niro is also seen gesturing exaggerated masturbation and heard in coarse joking [Eph. 5:4] with others in subjects such as castration, prostitution, erections, rape, and homosexuality. Crystal is one of them tucking the money in the girl's bikini underwear. There is even a display of Sobel cursing his dead father at the funeral. And there is talk of killing parents. Such behavior is completely unacceptable to our Father. Such programming does nothing but embolden such behavior and further the fabrication of excuses to hate parents. Some Mosaic verses speak to horrible punishment of the child who curses parents, disobeys them or holds them in low regard. Some of the verses speak of the child being stoned to death [Deut. 21:18 - 21]. Jesus did away with any right to stone someone to death when He told the men wanting to stone the woman legally found guilty of prostitution, "He who is without sin may cast the first stone." And that simple sentence covers ALL laws about stoning. But know this, God is very specific and speaks very darkly about the child who disrespects his/her father or mother or is rebellious against them. [Prov. 20:20, Matt. 15:4]. Though Jesus ended any right to stone people to death when he stopped the men from stoning the prostitute, He neither argued with the law NOR did He excuse the sin. Just as prostitution was (and is) as sinful after Jesus forgave the prostitute of it as it was before He forgave her, low regard for parents and rebellion against them is just as sinful now as it was in Moses' day. Whether you believe it or not. And likewise, parents, you sin as much if you force your kids into justified wrath against you. [Matt. 18:10, Eph. 6:4] Note that justified wrath is NOT simple anger at, e.g., righteously being denied a privilege as discipline. There is also a significant influence threat with drinking. Sobel, while claiming to be taking special health supplements was self-medicating at the time. He downed some medication of some sort then drank alcohol. Aside from the fact that the right side of his face was paralyzed, the result was all had a good time, health risks notwithstanding. The point is, no noticeable negative consequences thus glamorizing alcohol and drug abuse. "Why is that a problem. Everyone does it?" Please read carefully the following paragraph. And, yes, teenagers and younger kids are not supposed to be watching this R-rated show, but I can think of only about five or six of the hundreds of R-rated movies I've analyzed which did not have underage kids in the audience. A recent study revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking and smoking in entertainment leads to an undeniable increase in alcohol and tobacco abuse. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol From here the De Niro-mob formula is the same. Murder + violence + foul language + sex = De Niro-mob. Much coarse joking. Much gunfire death and murder. Much vulgarity and foul language. The most foul of the foul words was used at least 87 times in the 94 minutes of the movie [Col. 3:8]. Criminal activities are glorified and even presented as respectable [Hab. 2:12, Eccl. 8:11]. Mob warfare is viewed as righteous. Disregard for sexual purity was intense [Mark 7:20 - 21]. Let the listing in the Findings/Scoring section tell the story. . NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth. |
"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our nearly seven years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
