AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS (PG-13) -- Theft of childhood. Now bestiality is poking its ugly head into modern movies for youth.

Since this movie is targeted at preteens and early teens with the PG-13 rating, it is safe to assume that preteens and early teens will watch it. And when they do, they will become a little more worldly, a little more desensitized and will suffer yet another episode of theft of childhood from children.

Christian Media News

Movie stars Eddie Thomas (John Cusack) and Gwen Harrison (Catherine Zeta-Jones) are the heartthrob married duo in Hollywood. The entire world is in love with the two when they are together. But all is not quiet in Hollywood. Eddie and Gwen split up. Gwen shacks up with Spaniard, Hector (Hank Azaria). Gwen goes solo with a couple flops. Eddie seeks emotional help from an east Indian self help guru for a few weeks that turned out to be several months.

The last picture the two made together, "Time Over Time" is confiscated by a hippie director Hal Weidmann (Christopher Walken) who decides to put an innovative twist to it. To promote "Time Over Time", press agent Lee Phillips (Billy Crystal), fired earlier by bouncing studio boss Dave Kingman (Stanley Tucci), tries every maneuver in the book, whether honest or not, to get the public to believe Eddie and Gwen are reconciling their split, hoping the fabricated reconciliation will fool the public.

And all through this is Kiki (Julia Roberts), Gwen's sister gofering this and gofering that for everyone. But not for long. Eventually, Eddie and Kiki become an item. By the way, Julia is back to being Julia and not Erin Brockovich. But with others spouting foul language and God's name in vain more than 40 times an hour, the impact is about the same. Just not by Julia this time. And, yes, America's Sweethearts is "R-13." With a final score of 44 and an influence density of 1.47, it is hardcore R-13.

For Everything Christian

Not only are human sexual vulgarities [Rev. 2:20] and homosexuality [1Cor. 6:9-10] paraded as acceptable by the influence of "entertainment" for our young teens and preteens, now bestiality is poking its ugly head into popular movies for youth. This movie even excuses masturbation. In this flick, Billy Crystal has an encounter with Gwen's Doberman. The producers and Crystal combine their talents to present the Doberman burying its nose in Crystal's privates and nuzzling around while Crystal is seated. Later, the same dog is seen plainly licking Crystal's clothed genitals, with Crystal initially being uncomfortable with it but soon melting, saying to the dog "A little to the left." [Exod. 22:19] The dog was not "acting." And this is "entertainment?" Does the expression "stealing childhood from children" have more meaning to you now?

There are many, many ignominies in addition to those found above. While not a violent movie, America's Sweethearts is yet another step in lowering the threshold of acceptance of sexual immorality and language vulgarity. The total of them found are listed in the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model.

If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ].
  • Rev. 2:20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality... [Maybe "Jezebel" can be equated to modern entertainment. And this is found in the Book of Revelation -- prophecy of the end times. Are we there?]
  • 1Cor. 6:9-10 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Exod. 22:19 Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death. [Though Jesus's admonition of "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone..." (John 8:7) puts proper accountability on the "put to death" part of Exod. 22:19, His admonition in John 8:7 does NOT excuse the sin of bestiality. Not one little bit. He said He came not to change the law ... and He meant it.]

    *******Food for Thought*******
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]

As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie.

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I aplaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
