How can that be since non-ape biped life is only about 6,000 years old? Only in the movies. The title would be more accurate if it were, say, 3,000 BC. Or 2,000 BC. At any rate, 10,000 BC is a very violent film. With a final score of 57 it earns a CAP scoring equivalence to hardcore PG-13s in the comparative baseline database. D'Leh (Steven Strait) is an outcast, the son of a coward. D'Leh's father (Kristian Beazley), a master hunter who held the White Spear, left the tribe when D'Leh was but a boy at a time when he was needed the most. The tribe was soon to be endangered by the four-legged demons. But what seemed to be an ignoble reason for leaving the tribe is indeed noble. There is one who does not hold D'Leh in contempt for his father's alleged misdeed, the same-age blue-eyed Evolet. Though desperately in love, the love between D'Leh's and Evolet (Camilla Belle) will remain, for a time, unrequited since tribal mores deny that the two shall become one. In spite of forced social segregation, D'Leh and Evolet are destined to save the tribe from the four-legged demons. But the rescue of the tribe comes not without a setback. As the relationship between D'Leh and Evolet grows a band of brutal marauders capture most of D'Leh's tribe for sale into enslavement. Evolet is taken in the melee but D'Leh escapes. D'Leh vows to rescue Evolet. There begins a long journey into ... boredom. While an artistic feat in its own right, 10,000 BC is not one I would want to see again. There is nothing particularly offensive about it except the R-equivalent violence and murder. But that is just it. There is not much to the movie at all. But that is just my opinion. Let the report now move into the main reason parents, grandparent, pastors, youth leaders and others come to our pages. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) This film is intensely violent. It portrays how life was expected to be for the era. But accurate to the era or not, this film portrays graphic killing by blade and spear. Several sequences of action violence present some rather invasive imagery. These matters plus deaths by animal attack, abductions to enslave and "Let my people go" whippings combine to cause the loss of all of the starting 100 points in this investigation area. [Prov. 16:29, 1 Cor. 15:33] Impudence/Hate (I) There is not one utterance of any samples of the three/four letter word vocabulary nor of the most foul of the foul words. Not one. But other matters of impudence and/or hate provide the basis for the area score of 69 out of 100. An adult attacking and whipping a boy. Peddling flesh. A general theme of interracial/tribal hatred and behaviors representative of hate. [Rom. 12:18] Sexual Immorality (S) There are only two matters of sexually oriented attention in the entire 96 minutes of this film. A single crotch hit of a boy (he fell straddling a tree limb which may not seem "sexual" but any forcing of attention to the privates on the part of the writers makes it "sexual") and a few scenes of excessive cleavage by Evolet. Though she is portrayed in nuptial garb, there is only one reason for exposing so much of a woman's chest. [1Tim. 2:9] Drugs/Alcohol (D) Not one instance of possession or consumption of illegal drugs, of smoking, of drinking alcoholic beverages or of abuse of prescription drugs was noted. Offense to God (O) Now here is where it gets a little more rocky than in the other areas. Speaking to spirits [Deut. 18:10 - 11]. Seeing the future [Eccl. 8:7]. Prophesying through unholy powers [2Pet. 1:21]. Unholy resurrection. Granted, the story is based in witchcraft/sorcery by the Old Mother (Mona Hammond) and the Pyramid god (Tim Barlow), that a story depends on witchcraft and/or sorcery does not make such demonstrations acceptable. Even the Bible tells us about witchcraft but the Bible does not demonstrate it at all let alone in and as entertainment. [Eph. 4:27, Deut. 18:10 - 12] On a positive note, not once was heard God's name in vain, with or without the four letter expletive. Murder/Suicide (M) There are eight murders in this 96-minute film. By blade. By spear. By sacrifice. By arrow. [Ex 20:13] Not only does God rule that we shall not murder, He warns us, repeatedly, that the [unforgiven] murderer will not make it to Heaven. [Rev. 21:8, Gal. 5:21, Rev. 22:15] SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
