It Could Happen to You contained some violence and crime, one case was particularly severe. While Impunity/Hate(1) contained an example of an obscene phone call, the biggest reason Impunity/Hate received such a low score was, as you probably guessed, due to unacceptable language. The movie also presented a sprinlking of inappropriate and revealing dress, adultery and adulterous flirting, and an adult revealing the color of the underwear between his legs by flopping on a couch while wearing only a bathtowel. Only one reference to using beer to ease sorrows was found, but the use of God's name in vain averaged once every four minutes(2). While It Could Happen to You presented no occurences of murder or suicide, there was one descriptive case of talk of suicide describing the technique and "justification" to do so.
Additional examples of unacceptable material included
- discharging a firearm at and hitting a police officer
- admission of premarital sex
- thinking up lies to cover up true reason for absence
- a woman in the shower
- spouse screaming at spouse
- sexual innuendo
- wishing for someone to die
The ChildCare Action Project findings for It Could Happen to You are as follows.
In accordance with the comparative baseline data, It Could Happen to You was equivalent to R material in Sex/Homosexuality and Offense to God. It was equivalent to PG-13 material in Impunity/Hate. The movie was G material in Wanton Violence/Crime, Drugs/Alcohol, and Murder/Suicide.
Below is the table showing the scoring in each of the Investigation Areas plus the Final Score drawn from the actual CAP Report. In addition, the number of examples per hour of unacceptable material in each of the Investigation Areas is provided.
(1) As noted in CAP Special Report-0001, "Investigation Area Scoring and Trend," Impunity/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. I pray you will find time to read Special Report-0001. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.
(2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Impunity/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name in vain with and without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area.
