ALERT: To fully understand this report you should first visit the topics suggested by the CAP Home Page Table of Contents.

The heaviest loss of points inThe Mask occured in Wanton Violence/Crime because of frequent instances of violence and/or threat of violence. Gang wars, holding people at gunpoint, setting explosives at the feet of a bound woman, and offering money to abet murder drained the Wanton Violence/Crime score. As usual in a PG-13 movie, the starting 100 points in Impunity/Hate rapidly shrank due to unacceptable language in the form of frequent use of the three/four letter word vocabulary.(1). The Drugs/Alcohol content was relatively tame in that the only presence of drugs in the movie was in the theme of it. No actual examples of drug use/abuse nor techniques for consuming drugs were noted. Frequent use of God's name in vain was expensive to the Offense to God score.(2) Only two instances of planning of/ threat of murder were noted. The one death, though the result of "lawful police action," was still graphic death on the screen.

The ChildCare Action Project findings for The Mask are as follows.

The Mask CAP Thermometers
In accordance with the comparative baseline data, The Mask was equivalent to R-rated material in Wanton Violence/Crime, Impunity/Hate, and Sex/Homosexuality. It was equivalent to PG-13 material in Offense to God. The movie presented no material equivalent to PG material but was equivalent to G-rated material in Drugs/Alcohol and Murder/Suicide. Thus, 50% of The Mask was equivalent to the comparative baseline data corresponding to R-rated material, 17% percent was equivalent to PG-13 material, 33% was equivalent to G material.

(1) As noted in CAP Special Report-0001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend" Impunity/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. I pray you will find time to read Special Report-0001. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

(2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Impunity/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name in vain with and without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area.
